Zurna Reeds?

HI all,

I have a couple of Zurnas, and have always had trouble with the natural reeds for them. I only seem to be able to find cheap, crappy reeds that don't last long.

I have heard of people who make reeds out of yogurt containers, and have only found a text-only article on it, which is actually for making bagpipe reeds, so the actual measurements for the reed of a Zurna are not mentioned, though the basic techniques are explained.

Has anyone on this forum made their own reeds, and if so, what dimensions do i use?

Incidentally, I have a plastic reed for my medieval smallpipes, and it seems to work pretty good in my Zurna. It plays a full scale, but I think the timbre of the sound is too soft -- not whiney enough or loud enough, though perfect for practicing.

Any ideas? Thanks!

I've made zurna reeds out of McDonald's drinking straws ... I like the red and yellow stripes, but I guess any similar drinking straw could work. Got the idea from a website of some Australian guy named Pollak (he also makes gajda bags out of rubber dishwashing gloves and flutes out of hollowed-out carrots and radishes ... but I digress ...). Anyway, when I started doing this, I just stuck with the dimensions of the natural reeds that came with my zurna ... something like 1cm or thereabouts. Haven't experimented much with altering the length, to be honest. In any case, it's pretty easy. Check out his website at www.amcoz.com.au/pdfs/jour...nl6203.pdf
He's also got a short article about the ever-elusive fleahole ...
What size are your zurnas? I'm looking for one of those big kaba zurnas ...

Dave , would you be into sharing the text only article on making reeds from yoghurt containers?

Rhythm Fusion is a great world music instrument store in my hometown of Santa Cruz, California
and they always seem to have good Zurna reeds.

I was blown away the last time I was there to find an entire large box of really excellent Duduk reeds.
    I was in heaven!!!!!
