A friend of mine told me about this guy. He is quite amusing and I've ordered a couple CDs of is. =D
I like how one can never tell what kind of outfit he will wear.
I read that he's run for political office to. =D
He kind of reminds me of Andy Bell from Erasure.

Re: Azis
Wed, October 12, 2005 - 6:53 PMAzis was a traditional Romani singer, but now he is a chalga singer. He is also my obsession. . . He was the symbolic frontman for the Evroroma party in the past Bulgarian parlimentary elections, but his party didn't get voted in.
I guess you would classify him as chalga, which makes he fact that you posted something about him in this tribe pretty scandalous (at least to a Bulgarian).

Mon, February 27, 2006 - 4:09 PMHe's a bit like a car wreck. Horrifying, but one can't stop looking! He's a hell of a singer, too. -

Re: Azis
Tue, February 28, 2006 - 2:53 PMYes, exactly!!! I have a collection of his hit videos that I enjoy busting out when my friends are over. We've all discussed how it's so horrendous, but then again, so arousing. Truly a phenomena.

Bulgarian Chalga, was Azis
Wed, March 1, 2006 - 11:51 AMA friend of mine sent me this very interesting article about a visiting Briton's take on the Chalga movement. Probably better suited to the Chalga tribe however his lengthy article does address the significance of Bulgarian folk music and Gypsy, Turkish and Serbian culture and musical influences. He does mention Azis.

Thu, March 2, 2006 - 6:17 PMYes, it's quite entertaining-- I had a similar experience, except on video (not live.) The videos are truly something to behold. You can check out previews at bulgariancds.com -

Re: Bulgarian Chalga, was Azis
Mon, May 1, 2006 - 4:04 AMBy your response I can tell you are bulgarian--as well as scared of something. Perhaps you should do some more homework and figure out what is really "Bulgarian" and what is not. Bulgaria is not still just Slavs and hasn't been for 900 years, so maybe you should take your uneducated head out of your ass and look around and realize that the world is full of people who may not like the same music as you. As someone has spent the last 20 years of my life studying ethnomusicology and musical history and theory--I know quite a bit about bulgarian "native" music, and know that there is not just one "native" culture of bulgaria. Bulgarians are not just Thracians. i'm sorry you possibly were "educated" by a horrendous social system that rearranged the facts of history, but since 1989 you've had the chance to rectify this problem by looking outside of your little bubble. Do yourself a favor and either leave or open your eyes to the rest of the world.

The many looks of Azis
Mon, May 29, 2006 - 3:13 PMOh I just LOVE his videos. You just never know WHAT he's going to wear. He can look all thuggish and tough, look like a fashionista pretty boy, or he may come out in full drag.
Did you ever see the video to "Tochno Sega" by Azis and Ustata?
www.youtube.com/watch
There are several Azis videos on www.youtube.com. Just plug the name in its search.

Re: Azis
Thu, November 30, 2006 - 5:04 AMHi all
It's good to find somewhere where everyone is not completely anti-Chalga, anti-Azis.
I am a journalist living in London, but i also have a house in the mountains above Sliven, and am doing a piece on Chalga. I'm trying to get peoples opinions on why Chalga is so hated by so many Bulgarians (at least publically) even though it is one of the most listened to types of music there, and is becoming popular in other european countries, particularly western ones.
Any thoughts you would like to share with me would be gratefully received.
I have found an awful lot of material, much of an academic nature, on how Chlaga is degrading the Bulgarian psyche and represents a loss of direction post 1989. This all seems rather a lot to lay at the feet of pop music to me, and possibly more importantly shows a loss of direction in the people who choose such an easy target on which to lay their own anxiety.
Personally I find Chalga far preferable to modern derivative R & B or rap, but maybe as a foreigner this is just because it is new to me.
Anyway, that's enough from me. Thanks Jason -

Re: Azis
Thu, November 30, 2006 - 5:53 AMBTW, Renee. Azis reminds me more of Boy George (or many other 1980s new romantics) than Andy from Erasure.
