Last year, an associate of mine who lives in the Far East, mentioned to me how he went to Sofia for a quick business meeting before going on to the Greek islands with his new bride for their honeymoon.
While traveling through Bangkok, Thailand, many years ago, I noticed a plane of the then Balkan Bulgarian Airlines (I believe it's since been renamed) on the tarmac.
In visiting Bulgaria for tourism purposes, should one do it via the capital city? If so, what are the must-see sights for the first-time visitor? (my associate lamented the fact he and his wife didn't have time to go sightseeing while they were there).

Re: Traveling to Sofia
Tue, July 27, 2004 - 7:31 PMMy favorite places:
Nesebar: It is a little town – island on the Black See coast. It has 4000 years of history and many different layers of visible history.
Koprivshtica: A nice old picturesque little town tucked in the foothills of the Balkan mountain (it is technically in another chain:- ). That is where the famous Folk festival takes place every year / other year. Great romantic place.
Plovdiv: My hometown is situated on 7 hills and on many of those it has pieces of history. The main hill - the Old Town is even protected by Unesco as a cultural heritage site.
Veliko Turnovo: The 3d Bulgarian capital. Great place!
Bansko: Wine region, old town, great ambiance, close to Pirin Mountain and Rila Monastery.
Rila Monestery: Everyone’s favorite place to visit. It is worth it, but combine it with going to Bansko or Melnik.
Melnik: Time capsule of the good old times: wine, old architectture and great mountains.
For more information, research the travel books or online. If something peeks your interest more than other, let us Bulgarians know and we can tell you more.

Re: Traveling to Sofia
Tue, July 27, 2004 - 8:31 PMHey George,
A friend of mine told me that the black sea climate is more temperate-- warm during the winter like LA (though I can't imagine it's that warm!) But I was planning to go there around the end of October-December so it would be great if it wasn't so freezing cold.
She also told me you can work pruning rose bushes in the winter?
