I'm sorry I can't help you with the online business. I bought my kaba in Bulgaria. I've heard very inconsistent reports from online buying, but you can almost always count on having to put some maintenance work into the instrument to get it running optimally.

My teacher is Vassil Bebelekov in San Jose. One of the camps I attend annually, Balkan Music and Dance Workshop, usually has him on the schedule. He has also taught at Lark in the Morning camp. Both are one-week camps in Mendocino, California. Here are the URLs for them:

My other choice to recommend is Mark Levy in Eugene, Oregon. He teaches at the U of O and was my first gaida teacher ever. He studied with Dafil tren Dafilov in the Rhodopes. He's an extraordinary musician and really nice guy. He's married to Carol Silverman, who tours with Yuri Yunakov, and is an expert in Rom culture and music. You probably can get his email through the U of O directory in Eugene. Tell I sent you!

Craig in Arcata

If you are passing through Arcata, CA, on Highway 101, look me up!

The cheapest Gaidas I've found are on Bulgariana.com I received mine today and its great except for the reeds. If you buy anywhere other than Bulgariana.com you looking to pay $300s and up instead of just $180 something. I'm just a beginner so I didn't want to spend alot of money.

Hi,
I'm dying to learn the Kaba Gaida and I was planning on getting a bagpipe from Bulgariana.com until I heard that their bagpipes aren't very good quality and need a lot of work done on them before they are ready to play. I would like to find a good source of affordable Gaidas, but I'm not sure where to look anymore. Does anyone out there have any suggestions?

I'm also on a search for a good teacher. Lately, my haunts have been Oregon and California, but I also spend time in Washington, British Columbia, Quebec, Idaho, Nevada, and New Mexico. Anyone around those parts would be great to know about. I would be willing to travel further for a really great teacher.

Thanks a lot!
